Respecting our people
We believe our people are our greatest asset and we aim to enable a culture that encourages high performance, integrity and inclusion. Our Code of Conduct, values and culture shape who we are and how we act. Our pursuit of performance with integrity, sustainability and purpose comes in part from our Finnish roots. We drive our culture forward based on our values of Respect, Challenge, Achievement and Reward.
Attracting the best talent from diverse backgrounds is key to a successful, sustainable business.
Highlights in 2019
We aim to make our company a great place to work, inclusive of all, encouraging development
and learning and attracting the best talent.
Closing the unexplained pay gap
In 2019, we closed the unexplained pay gap based on pay equity analysis we conducted with Mercer. This analysis found a small but statistically significant unexplained pay gap in the company ¨C a gap that could not be explained by factors that drive pay at Nokia, such as performance, experience, job grade, or location.
Learn, learn and keep learning
We again held our annual celebration of learning, Nokia Global Days of Learning: a 3-day event for all our employees to join virtual presentations and in-person events at our locations around the world. Topics included technology, operations and business skills.
Gender Equality score
We achieved a strong score of 71.26%, well above the average of 63.41% for the 37 technology companies in Bloomberg¡¯s Gender Equality Index (GEI) for 2020 ¨C the second time in a row that we are included in this index.
Attracting and keeping talented people
Building, maintaining and attracting a talented workforce remains a key to continued success. We believe we must continually develop our culture, our talent management, performance support, and career development.
Nokia People Focus is our performance and talent management approach. The approach provides a framework for company goals, individual performance, talent management, career development, reward, and recognition.
Commonly shared cultural principles and a strong focus on Drive, Dare and Care forms the platform we use to shape our core culture. Our cultural progress and evolution are monitored through a company-wide employee survey. We are currently migrating toward the use of a new survey and associated tool, which emphasizes team performance.
Freedom of association and collective
We respect the right to collective bargaining and freedom of association. Collective bargaining agreements are local, and in most countries where we have collective bargaining agreements employees who have chosen not to be members of a union are also covered. Employees can choose freely to join, not join, or leave unions and associations and select their representatives based on local and international practices. We encourage active, open communication and dialog with employees and/or their representatives.
In countries where local works councils operate, we work with them as needed. We communicate regularly with employees directly as well as in meetings such as the European Works Council (EWC) in Europe.
Employees and management prepare and participate in the annual EWC plenary. We offer free elections for employees to choose union representatives. Majority of production employees were represented by an independent trade union or covered by collective bargaining agreements.
Employee representatives are entitled to participate in trainings that are a necessityin order to take care of employee representative duties and to increase their awareness of trade union rights and obligations. Additionally, employee representatives are provided the opportunity to use company infrastructure during the work day.
Below is a sample of countries where we operate and where 100% or majority of the employees are covered by collective bargaining agreements.
- Burkina Faso
- Czech Republic
- Ivory Coast
